March 2008

Dear Cadets and Parents/Guardians,

Welcome back, once again the sailing season is upon us.  This is just a small note to fill you in on what’s happened since the winter break and what the plans are for this summer.

What’s new??

We (TMSC) were successful in our bid to ON-Board for a £10,000 grant to go towards buying new boats and equipment.  We have ordered 2 RS Visions and an RS Feva.  These boats are very flexible and can be easily transformed from stable learning craft to exciting asymmetric, trapeze boats.  The boats are due to be delivered by the end of March, in time for us to use.

Our aim is to try and buy another RS Feva so that we have two of each boat. This will hopefully go forward once we have the necessary funds.

We have sold one of the old Bosun dinghies and the GP14.  These boats served us well whilst we were getting established as a training facility but now times and demands have changed.  So with the view to keeping maintenance to a minimum and having the right boats to suit our needs we have bought the 3 new boats (see above)

The Plan for This Summer

23rd April- Weather permitting, we will be outside in the boat yard rigging the boats to make sure everything is in order and listing any defects found to ensure that everything is work for when we go afloat. Register in the start hut. Please wear warm clothes as it will still be chilly.

30th April- This will be our first session afloat. Cadets will continue until 30th July which will be ‘Pirate Night’.  As you can expect sailing will be weather permitting. There will always be a ‘Plan B’ if we are not able to go on the water so please do still turn up.

Clothing

Base Layer- if possible a wet suit would be ideal, if not then you will need some clothes that will keep you warm. Jeans are not acceptable because they are quite unpractical when wet. Make sure they are old clothes.

Footwear- wet suit boots are best as they keep your feet warm. Beach shoes, trainers etc are all acceptable.  For health and safety reasons footwear must be worn at all times.

Buoyancy Aids – if you have your own please just check with me on the first night that it will be ok to use and if it is then you are welcome to use it.  We do provide buoyancy aides in a range of sizes.  There is no charge for the use of these, the only requirement is that they are rinsed off with fresh water and hung up in the rack at the end of the session.

Spray tops- same as the buoyancy aids.

All sailing gear provided by TMSC is done so with the interest of the welfare of the cadets, this equipment does come at a cost to us, so I ask that you take care of it as your own and report any defects to an instructor.  The loan of this equipment is done so on a first come first served basis.

The sailing club has an account with Sola.  We get all gear at a discounted price. You are welcome to order from the catalogues. Sadly there is no returns policy so make sure you get the right size.  Keren manages this account and will be doing an order soon.  The catalogues will be available to view on cadet nights, just ask an instructor.  Please can I have all orders in by 16th April.

Registration and Times

Cadets must be registered by the very latest 18:15hrs Boats are to be rigged and ready to go afloat by 18:30hrs Anyone who is late I am afraid may not be able to participate that evening. This decision is influenced by safety and the limited time we have afloat. It is unfair on those who turn up on time to have to wait for latecomers. Wrist tallies will be given when you register. Please return your tally to the board as soon as you come ashore.  Safety boats cannot come ashore until all the cadets have been accounted for.  We aim for the sessions to finish by 20:00hrs but as you can appreciate these may sometimes overrun.

No cadets should go to the changing rooms, until ALL boats are derigged and ‘put to bed’.  Always ask an instructor before going to get changed.

Volunteers

As most of you know, it’s quite an operation to get every one afloat, on time and to have a good sailing session.  If any parents would like to offer their help I cannot stress how much it would be appreciated, be it rigging, launching, recovering or derigging.  Those who have power boat qualifications can help crew the safety boats.  Don’t panic if you are a little rusty, myself or one of the other instructors will coach you until you are confident to crack on by yourself.  If you don’t like the idea of getting wet and cold then assistance shore-side would be welcomed.  Help is needed to collect the money on registration, help pull trolleys up the beach etc.  Free RYA First Aid courses are available to helpers as a small token of our appreciation.

Racing

For those who are interested, club boats are available to race on Mondays and Thursdays. The boats available are Picos, Toppers, RS Visions, RS Feva and the Bosun. The cost for the hire of the boat is £2.50 this includes race fee. If you have your own boat and would like to race it but are a little unsure how to go about it, come and have a chat with me and we will try and work out a way to give you some coaching and get you out racing!!

Courses

Stage 1+2 sailing course- This is the RYA entry level course for juniors wishing to start sailing. The course will be running at the end of March/ start of April. Specific dates will follow soon. There are 12 places, first come first served basis. Priority will be given to the newer cadets with no sailing experience as I would like to get them up to speed as quick as possible so we can get more out of the evening sessions. Depending on demand we will look to run other courses later in the year. Course fee is still to be decided but I will let you know shortly. If you are interested please let me know asap.

Honda Rib Challenge

Sadly we will not be hosting it this year.  The event will be hosted by Torbay Sailing Club, dates to follow soon.  If you are interested please tell myself or Kevin.

Apologies for the letter being so long winded but hopefully this gives you everything you need.  Any queries or questions and you wish to speak to me, please feel free to ring me on 07515011037.

Happy sailing

Nick Green
