Port of Plymouth sailors triumph in The KINGS CUP Phuket A great result for a
team of local sailors in the most prestigious regatta in the far east,
The Kings Cup in Phuket, Thailand. Roy Morgan, Steve Wassell, Jamie
Watts, Rachael Morris (Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club) Steve “Bushy”
Arrowsmith (Royal Corinthian) and Jim Slater (Tamar River Sailing
Club) took the honours in IRC 2 class of the Kings Cup. Their racing yacht “Team
Sea Bees” hired from local sailor Peter Dyer and helmed by Jamie Watts
won 3 of the four days events to become outright champions. A rare
victory in this class for any visiting team against the odds on
favourites from The Royal Thai Navy who have held the cup for many
years. “It was a great
achievement to win this class in the Kings Cup. Phuket is a special
place to race and to walk away with the Cup was a real bonus. All the
team performed at the top of their game to win this regatta” said
Steve Wassell. Peter Dyer's boat “Team Sea Bees” always creates interest in Phuket and when the local press heard of the entry from Plymouth there was a lot of speculation on how they would perform in the very fickle winds synonymous of Phuket. Jamie Watts showed great concentration in the challenging conditions and the crew performed admirably to receive the Kings Cup from the Kings personal representative at the prestigious Kata Beach Hotel in December.
