Windsurfing

Now firmly on the agenda at Torpoint club

Local yacht and dinghy club Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club (TMSC) added windsurfing to its member activities for the first time on Tuesday 1 June when RYA Regional Club Coach Tim Cross helped run a taster event.

The aims of the evening were to introduce windsurfing as a viable activity for club members and also to welcome local windsurfers to experience the club’s facilities with a view to joining.

On an evening of blue skies, with a north-westerly force 4 wind, the tide flooded the stone beach area to the west of the clubhouse and created a natural training lagoon with chest deep water. Individuals from the local community and local sixth forms joined club members to take part in introductory windsurfing sessions. Most participants made rapid progress through the first basic stages of the sport, and all left wanting to take their new-found skills to the next level.

At the same time, competent windsurfers were able to make the most of the flat-water conditions, using Starboard and Tushingham demo and taster kit provided by Reactive Water Sports and the Mount Batten Centre.

According to Kevin Crane, the club’s commodore, the evening was a clear success, with TMSC proving that it certainly has the location and the motivation from its members to develop windsurfing opportunities at the club: “Everybody clearly enjoyed themselves - this was obvious from the smiles on their faces. Windsurfing is certainly an activity we would like to see develop at the club.”

Dave Ewer of Reactive Watersports added: “It’s great to see that the RYA is supporting events in the community and working to ensure a positive future for windsurfing.”

TMSC is on the western side of Plymouth, on the Cornish side of the River Tamar. Its proximity to the best windsurfing location in Plymouth, St John’s Lake, naturally provides the future opportunity to include windsurfing as a membership option. Tim Cross will be working closely with the club to ensure the future sustainability of windsurfing there.
