TMSC Subscriptions 2021
At risk of repeating my annual letter I want to say that the management committee, all of whom are volunteers, have worked incredibly hard this year to ensure that the club opened when it could, put on sailing when allowed, and managed the finances including applying for every grant going. This was no mean feat in a complex and ever-changing pandemic. Now, as we approach Christmas, things look as though they may change again.
For some months the committee has been looking at our costs and how we cover them. It is clear that even with the grants we have had our fees do not cover the operating costs of the club and its staff in a period where the social income is so low.
The committee therefore made the difficult decision to increase the subscriptions as we are now dipping into our reserves. As a limited company we have to act with financial responsibility, as I know you will understand.
However - we also made a commitment to members that moving to a limited company status would not change the very special nature of your club. And it is your club. Many of you have told us that the rise is too much and too soon and we also recognise that this is an expensive time of year and for some of you earnings this year may have been affected. Perhaps we didn't explain the situation clearly enough, which we should have.
Although the rise was introduced after debate and voting, the committee have revisited their decision and believe we can balance reserves against income if we all continue to support the bar and Kilby's as much as we are allowed. We will therefore revert to the previous subscription structure plus RPI, rounded to £0.50p. This means that all rates actually go up only by £0.50p. The senior single and couple rates are reinstated too.
I and the committee hope this will reassure you that the club will continue as an inclusive mix of social life and sailing. It was never our intention to keep it exclusive to one group or another.
This of course still comes at a price and we are forecasting unrecoverable costs of up to around £7,000 in the year ahead, although frankly it is an unknown future. This means savings will need to be found, and we will look at this is the new year once the current covid situation clarifies. It is important that all members recognise that going forward we still have to look at our structure, and the fair sharing of a reasonable level of costs between members, whilst remaining a price competitive club. You have my commitment that this will be done in consultation with members so that whatever the solution looks like we have heard your views first.
Lastly, I know that we have also had messages of support for the increases and I thank those members who have already paid. Our membership secretary, Neville Griffiths will make arrangements for refunds if you make contact with him or via bar staff please.
