Commodore's Christmas Letter 2020
I trust this letter finds you, your family and friends well at this Christmas season. It is certainly likely to the best of times, and the worst of times, as we obey the rules and try to stay safe whilst seeing something of our loved ones and enjoying a little social spirit.
I know this is not going to be easy for any of us, whichever tier the Covid lottery has put you in, so I don't want to dwell on that. We covered this year's history in the AGM reports. Instead I want to invite you all to join me in looking forward to a positive new year, when we can once again fully function as a great club and as a dedicated group of friends with a common purpose.
I and your directors and management are fully dedicated to doing what it takes to make the future work for us, and will be looking at every opportunity to get us active on the water, and earning income at every corner as this situation unfolds. But this is not just the committee's call. I need you all to bring your imagination and enthusiasm to your club next year, with a particular focus on comprehensive sailing activity which attracts and retains members, and training where we can to continue to invest in our eager young members and adults too! In addition to this we need a full social program wherever the rules allow so we can reinvigorate the heart of the club and renew our friendships, and of course, recharge the club coffers through fundraising activity.
So, we will in due course resurrect quiz nights, commodore's drinks, cheese and wine and any anything else members would like to do.
We need to plan for these things now as a contingency depending on the likely scenarios we are presented with, so that we are ready to go when we get to those broad sunlit uplands So, don't wait ideas and input please. Whilst I am on the subject, we also need a club secretary to minute and help run meetings: no volunteers were forthcoming at the AGM but we could sure do with one now. Please email me if you are interested and we can have a chat about what's involved. email@example.com
Now the commercial break:
Whichever way you look at 2020, we have had a financially demanding year. We have paid our bills on time, we have kept our staff employed and successfully claimed back grants and furlough payments. This we are continuing to do. However, the latest lockdown did bring a fresh assault on our cashflow and the reserves. There is no reason to panic but we have to be realistic and all play our part in our planned recovery. This means a number of things: attracting and keeping members and a good social income balanced by watching our costs. At the virtual AGM members voted for a revised constitution with a slimmed down membership structure. The Committee, through the club byelaws, have put new subscription rates for 2021 to these as follows:
Single Member - £35.00
Couple - £45.00
Family - £55.00
Single Parent - £40.00
I am being absolutely upfront about this, because although we run this club for the members, it is also here because we all want it to be. Our subscriptions have historically been very low compared to other similar sailing clubs; they do not fully cover our running costs nowadays and we rely on our social trading income to add the extra required. Additionally, the club offers a full service both to those who sail as well as to those who are content with the social, and all of us share the cost of this.
With this income curtailed for much of this last year, we have now dipped into our reserves and although this is manageable for the short term, we rely on the annual subscription round to rebuild our cash in hand. These new rates are still not unrealistic.
Subscriptions are due on January 1st and definitely by Jan 31st if you want to avoid rejoining fees. But more importantly, the sooner its paid, the quicker we start to rebuild our reserves for future investment into all aspects of the club. You can pay online through the website or you can still pay over the bar which opens 2nd December at 12 noon precisely! Membership forms and renewal forms will be available at the club. If I can persuade you to pay as early as possible then you can relax knowing you have done your bit for the war effort! Oh, and please make sure we have your up to date email address.
Now back to Christmas.
I and your club officers and committee would like to wish you and your families a very happy, peaceful and safe Christmas and that you can spend time with your loved ones wherever you are. I would also like to wish you a very happy and prosperous new year in which you all keep safe, well and secure. Let's plan for it!
In the meantime, I hope Christmas brings you everything you wish for. In my case it's a very old, out of production, Yanmar fuel pump.
With Kindest Wishes to you all.
