Brass Monkey Race Report
Published 18:26 on 1 Jan 2026
11 boats braved the coldest day of the year so far to race in the TMSC Brass Monkey race. Although cold the weather was otherwise perfect for a NYD sail - sunshine and 10 knots of wind. The ROs were kind to us and set a short, easy course of St John 2, 1st yellow, ferry. 4 laps - although we knew it would be shortened to 3.
The biggest problem were the shallows off the Ballast Pound - they seem to be getting bigger every year. Several boats hit bottom on the first lap, the most serious being Joe in his Phantom as the quick release rudder downhaul didn't. Result a ripped off top to the blade. Fortunately he could still sail and finish, but only because it was light winds.
But before all that Nik had shot off ahead, never to be seen again (I think I've written that before!). For the rest, Roger had made the best start and was clearly going to be well placed on handicap. Sadly it was a "anyone can lose in an asymmetric" race, so the 2000s and 200 suffered badly. Great to see Mark in his first race in his new Streaker.
So after 45 minutes it was no surprise that Nik won comfortably, almost 2 minutes ahead. Full results are here:

The next club race is a pursuit race on Feb 8th
As always grateful thanks to the start hut and safety boats - who for once had time to take a stack of photos. Some you see here, more are on our Tamar Casual Sailing WhatsApp group.
